Project Overview

Nollywood is the second-largest movie industry in the world in terms of output. During its 30th anniversary, we wanted to create an experience that showcases the rich history and future promise of the industry. We wanted to create a platform that represented the progress and potential of Nollywood to anyone interested.

The Problem

We noticed that while there were a lot of websites, social media content, and general hype about Nollywood online, there wasn’t any platform that housed all the information in an authentic and visually pleasing manner.

The Crevtus Way

Drawing inspiration from Nigeria's rich filmmaking heritage, we designed a website that pays homage to two elements that shaped Nigeria's cinematic landscape: "movie clubs" (rental kiosks) and the physical media formats—VHS and CDs—that dominated the early years of Nollywood.

This enabled us to create an experience of browsing and renting movies before streaming became a popular medium for watching movies.

The Craft

Interactive Design

The website's design pays tribute to two things that helped Nollywood become so popular:

  • Movie Clubs: These were local movie rental kiosks in Nigeria. We recreated that feeling of browsing and "renting" movies to bring back happy memories for visitors who experienced the real thing.
  • VHS and CDs: Those old-school tapes and discs played a big role in Nollywood's early days. We added subtle hints, like a flickering effect on the top of the website and a virtual movie shelf that highlights essential Nollywood films.

We also added easter eggs, such as short countdown when it the website loads, just like in vintage cinema.

By combining these design ideas, the website becomes more than just a place to find facts about Nollywood. It's a fun way to experience Nollywood's history firsthand.

Intuitive Navigation

The website was designed like a landing page to ensure a smooth flow of information, guiding users effortlessly through the website's content.

We also created a simple navigation bar and footer to allow users to revisit their favourite sections with ease, encouraging deeper exploration of Nollywood's history.

Lastly, we curated a must-watch movies section to highlight essential Nollywood films, providing users with valuable insights and recommendations.

The website's visual identity reflects both the rich history and ongoing vibrancy of Nollywood. We made use of green and gold hues to represent Nigeria and symbolise the enduring "golden age" of Nollywood cinema.

We also made use of the Druk Wide Bold font, which, like its name suggests, is wide and bold to add character while ensuring readability. The font was crucial to elevating the user experience, ensuring a cohesive visual identity that celebrates Nollywood's past and present.

Impact

We created a platform that not only serves as a comprehensive information hub for Nollywood but also fosters a nostalgic connection for users by replicating a piece of the industry's history. The website itself served as an artistic destination for our Independence Day-themed campaign, which resulted in a surge in brand awareness and engagement for Crevtus.
